Yes, Summer is Coming!

The violent thunderstorms tonight found me hiding in the pantry (our "safe" room). The trees were still...not a leaf moved...there was no breeze..the sound of silence....Then, through the humid air...lightning flashed...thunder roared...the sky became an eerie shade of green...and the rains came!

Hopefully, the plants in the garden faired well. Hopefully the BUGS in the garden DID NOT. Yesterday, I was treated to the laughter of quite a few...I discovered unwanted guests in the potatoes, tomatoes and beans. And somebody is nibbling tiny holes in some leaves...Hmmm...Mr. Grasshopper...is this your handiwork? If so, I do not like it!!! As soon as the water recedes a bit, there will be measures taken.

The pics this week highlight a few\ members who are now beginning to really show their true colors...Oh, and the last picture is a visitor that watched me weed for about an hour...kind of a curious soul.

Bugs Bunny would be so proud!

By Halloween, these may have a scary face!

This butternut squash poked its head into the sun.

Beans are sprouting everywhere! The vines are long and lean!

It's Beginning to Really Grow...

What a difference a week makes!!! The weather was sunny and cool (at least for May in Texas!). Last week's rains combined with a bit of additional fertilizer and plant food gave the veggies some much needed nourishment...some weeds tried to invade and dampen the parade, but they were quickly detected and annihilated...the plants were happy...and it shows! This week welcomed some new members...baby butternut squashes...anaheim chili peppers and a few additional tomatoes. The dill is growing by leaps and bounds...as are the beans and potatoes! All in all...we're pretty pleased.

Ole!!! These could be HOT!

Butternut Soup? Could be tasty...

Fresh tomatoes...yum...

Beans, carrots, and potatoes...

Things are Looking Up!

Despite several weeks of severe weather (thunderstorms and tornados...oh my!) alternated with hot dry winds (sometimes 40 mph and more!), the garden is progressing. There were some casualties (wind damage) along the way. Gone are TCU tomatillios, anything that looks like an herb (sorry basil, fennel, and rosemary!) sweet peas, snap peas, and a bunch of marigolds. New additions include: more beans, tomoatoes, jalapeno peppers, cilantro, crook neck squash and a few pumpkins. We have annihilated a large grub population and are currently working on the demise of grasshoppers and snails...the turnip greens were really tasty (if you like that sort of thing...) and so was the spinach and lettuce!

Beans are beginning to sprout!

Fried green tomatoes?

Take that you snails!
